SK telecom consortium to develop quantum cryptography

SK telecom announced on Tuesday that it secured a national project to develop a highly secure quantum cryptography communication system for wireless and satellite communications. The project will be executed by a consortium comprising SK telecom, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute ETRI, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute KASI, the Korea Testing Laboratory KTL, and Kyung Hee University.

The consortium won the project to develop a long-distance wireless quantum key distribution QKD system for satellite deployment, which was commissioned by the Institute for Information amp; Communications Technology Planning amp; Evaluation IITP under the Ministry of Science and ICT.

QKD technology is renowned for its high security as it generates and distributes quantum encryption keys between the sender and receiver simultaneously, making it theoretically immune to hacking. It is considered the most secure encryption method available to date.

Over the next five years, the consortium aims to develop a 30 km-class long-distance wireless QKD system that can be deployed both on the ground and in satellites. The project will integrate high-performance QKD implementation technology, optical integration technology, adaptive optics technology, and wireless laser communication technology. The consortium will also develop various core QKD technologies, including ultra-fast quantum random number generators QRNG, high-performance single-photon avalanche diode SPAD detectors, and new QKD protocols.

Meanwhile, SK telecom will also participate in the quantum fab construction project led by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology KAIST. This project involves building a facility dedicated to developing semiconductor materials based on quantum mechanics. SK telecom plans to develop optical integrated circuit modules for QKD at the 2,500 square meter quantum fab, which is expected to be established at KAIST by 2031.
