Korean govt expands 2025 RD budget by 13.2% > 경제기사 | economics

The South Korean government on Thursday proposed next year’s research and development Ramp;D budget at about 24.8 trillion won $17.2 billion, up 13.2 percent from this year’s spending.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on Thursday that the 2025 budget allocation and adjustment plan for national Ramp;D projects was finalized at the 9th National Science and Technology Advisory Council meeting.


The figure represents an increase of 13.2 percent compared to this year’s budget, which was significantly cut. Compared to the 2023 budget of 24.7 trillion won before the cut, the budget increased by 1 percent.

Park Sang-ook, senior presidential secretary for science and technology, noted that the Ramp;D budget for next year has been expanded significantly even though the total government budget increase rate for next year is predicted to be about 4 percent.

The Ramp;D spending will focus on investments in artificial intelligence AI and chips, along with advanced bio and quantum technology, which the government has earlier described as future game changers in science and engineering.

Specifically, 1.2 trillion won will be spent on AI and semiconductor Ramp;D, 2.1 trillion won on advanced biotechnology, and 170 billion won on quantum technology.

The government plans to boost investment in next-generation AI and chips, advance core bio-manufacturing technologies, and enhance the research ecosystem in quantum technology by developing innovative quantum technologies.

The high-tech sector alone will receive approximately 3.4 trillion won, according to an official from the presidential office.

Basic research is set to receive 2.94 trillion won, an 11.6 percent increase from this year. Government-funded research institutes, which experienced significant budget cuts this year, will see spending of 2.1 trillion won, up 11.8 percent from this year.
