South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc., and Hyundai Motor Group have made investments in Nvidia Corp. challenger Tenstorrent, an artificial intelligence AI chip startup, according to media sources on Monday.
Jim Keller, founder and chief executive officer of Tenstorrent, said in an interview that Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics joined the Series D funding round worth nearly $700 million. The fund-raising was led by Samsung Securities Co. and AFW Partners.
Hyundai Motor Group has also reportedly made an investment in the funding.
Founded in 2016 by semiconductor pioneer Keller, the Toronto-based company is a fabless startup focused on chip design.
While Samsung and LG Electronics have previously collaborated with the startup, the round marks their first investment.
Tenstorrent plans to use the funds to expand its engineering team, invest in its supply chain, and develop large artificial intelligence AI training servers to demonstrate its technology.
