South Korea’s draft of landmark artificial intelligence AI legislation is likely to be enacted by the end of this year, following the approval by the National Assembly’s judiciary committee on Tuesday.

The Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly approved the proposed AI Basic Act.


The legislation serves as the framework and principles for government support to ensure the responsible growth of the AI industry and lays the groundwork for fostering trust in the sector.

Instead of directly prohibiting any use of specific AI applications, the law identifies AI technologies related to human life and physical safety as high-impact AI.

Tech industry officials, however, have raised concerns about Article 40, among other provisions.

Article 40 outlines the circumstances under which AI companies and developers may be required to submit data or undergo investigations when “authorities discover or suspect any violation of the law” or “any complaint is filed.”
